Through our Heavy Equipment Operator and Heavy Civil Skilled Worker Programs — both registered Nova Scotia Private Career College programs — students receive classroom and hands-on instruction for work in the Heavy Civil Construction Industry.

Before candidates are eligible for their first interview, they must submit a copy of their current resume; nomination letter(s); Grade 12 diploma OR transcript(s), or post-secondary certificates/degrees/highest for grade complete; and a copy of their current, valid driver's license. The nomination letter is a character reference letter from a current or former employer, teacher, coach, or mentor.

The program runs from February through September, with exact dates announced each year.
There is no cost to apply; tuition for successful applicants is $8000 plus applicable taxes, and participants may be eligible for third-party financial assistance through Student Loans or EI assistance.
The Dexter Institute Private Career College
Located in Bedford, NS, the Dexter Institute Private Career College offers two provincially recognized programs: Heavy Equipment Operator and Heavy Civil Skilled Worker. Both programs involve approximately seven weeks of classroom theory, six weeks of practical training, and a roughly three-month paid work term. Heavy Equipment Operator students will specialize in two-to-three pieces of gear, while Heavy Civil Skilled Worked students will gain advanced placement by job shadowing one of many fields in Heavy Civil Construction (such as Surveying, Crusher Operations, Asphalt, Pipe, or Concrete, among others).
Graduates of both programs are guaranteed an offer of employment. Acceptance into the program is competitive.
