Program Overview

The Class 3 Driver Training Program will train you to safely and efficiently operate a Class 3 commercial vehicle.

After gaining a foundational knowledge of commercial driving through classroom instruction, students will then develop their driving skills by way of practical, hands-on training. The Program is designed to prepare graduates for entry level Class 3 driver positions in a variety of industries such as civil construction, environmental services and transportation.

Program Schedule

Days 1-8


Students gain a general introduction to the commercial driving industry, including rules and regulations, as well as the basic principles of shifting, braking and maneuvering.

Days 8-15


Students apply the knowledge learned during classroom theory and begin developing hands-on skills in a safe environment.

Days 15-25

Public Roads:

Students hone skills across 4 different stages of public road driving in preparation to take the Access NS Class 3 Road Test (for which a vehicle will be provided).

Admission Requirements

Application Requirements:

To apply to the program, you will need to submit the below documents. Once all documents are received your initial interview will be scheduled.

• Up to date resume
• Copy of Driver’s Licence (N must be removed)
• Letter of reference
• Copy of high school diploma or transcript
• Must be 18 years of age or older


Enrollment Requirements:

If offered a seat in the program you will be asked to provide the following documents to complete your enrollment:

• Nova Scotia Driver’s Medical Test
• Driver’s Abstract
• Air Brake Endorsement on your Driver’s Licence
• Proof of successful Class 3 Knowledge Test

Course Dates

Our Class 3 Driver Training Program is scheduled to begin in May 2022. Note: this year’s program is now full, but please stay tuned for updates on our intake schedule for 2023.


There is no cost to apply; tuition for successful applicants is $4000 + taxes. Tuition includes textbooks and all course material. Participants may be eligible for third party financial assistance through Student Loan or EI Insurance.

Offer of Employment

Upon passing the Nova Scotia Class 3 road test, all graduates of the Dexter Institute Private Career College are guaranteed an offer of employment with the Municipal Group of Companies.

Positions come with a paid one to two-week mentorship training program. This training prepares you with the specific knowledge and skills required for the position you are being offered.
